Tummy tucks, medically known as an abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes excess skin and fat tissue around the abdomen. It also tightens the abdominal muscles, resulting in a smooth, fitted, and natural appearing abdomen.
Tummy tucks are most commonly performed on patients who’ve experienced pregnancy and childbirth, or undergone drastic weight loss. Pregnancy and weight gain stretches and sometimes separates the abdominal muscles, making it tough to lose weight through dieting and exercise. An abdominoplasty will not entirely repair severed muscles. However, it will tighten those muscles, creating the appearance of a slim and trim waistline.
Tummy tuck is almost always an outpatient procedure and patients will have the option of general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. The incision is between the belly button, and pubic hairline is placed to gain access to the abdominal muscles. In some cases, a second incision near the belly button is required to remove excess skin.
Patients will experience bruising and swelling after the procedure. Tummy Tucks are invasive procedures, and typically patients require at least two months before they can resume all normal activity. After two weeks, patients can stop taking pain medication and start driving. They usually begin exercising after four weeks, and all signs of the procedure should be gone between 12 to 18 months.
Patients are often concerned that their belly button will move or change in appearance. A miss-shaped belly button is a clear tell sign that a tummy tuck took place. Dr. Egozi takes great pride in his abdominoplasty work by ensuring that the belly button’s appearance remains natural. A belly button is only altered during this procedure when the tissue surrounding it is removed or altered. Dr. Egozi takes great care to make sure that if the belly button is changed, it is done so in a natural looking way.
It is important for patients to understand that Abdominoplasty is not a substitute for weight loss or dieting. Suitable candidates are in good health, exercise regularly, and eat healthily.
All patients will meet with Dr. Egozi for a consultation appointment. This meeting will provide the patient the opportunity to become more educated about the procedure. It also allows Dr. Egozi to perform an evaluation and make the appropriate recommendations.
