An abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries performed around the world, and a highly effective modern body contouring procedure. It is most commonly performed on patients post pregnancy/childbirth or after drastic weight loss. Pregnancy and changes in weight stretch and sometimes separate the abdominal muscles, making it much tougher to lose weight via dieting and exercise. While a tummy tuck won’t entirely repair these muscles, it will tighten them, creating the appearance of a slimmer and trimmer waistline!

Due to the nature of the surgical procedure, can take a couple weeks or more. Many factors play into the speed with which you recover from your tummy tuck. Whether or not you smoke, your level of activity post-op, the strength of your immune system, and your body’s ability to heal all play a role in the nature of your recovery. Advances in modern plastic surgery make the likelihood of complications now less than ever.

What recovery looks like

Tummy tucks are an outpatient procedure, and typically done under general anesthesia. An incision is made in the bikini line to gain access to the abdominal muscles. The first week of recovery you can expect your abdomen to be swollen and sore. Ice packs can help reduce inflammation, and pain medication will be prescribed to ease discomfort and soreness. The most effective way to lower your risk of post-operative complications is to follow all your recovery instructions to a tee!

Post surgery, your abdomen will be bandaged and you will wear a compression garment for the first 10 days or so to help reduce swelling, prevent the formation of blood clots, and help your body heal into the desired contour. Bandages should be changed regularly and the area should be cleaned carefully each day. After 2 weeks, you should be able to stop taking pain meds and begin driving again. Exercise is typically okay after 3 weeks.
