Liposuction

Tumescent vs. Traditional Techniques

Liposuction, or “lipo” as many patients refer it by, is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat deposits. Patients seek lipo to improve and enhance their body’s contour and proportionality. In many cases, patients seek this procedure to treat cellulite (dimpled skin on the hips, buttocks, and thighs), and saggy skin.

It is performed on a number of areas of the body including but not limited to the thighs, buttocks, and hips, back, upper arms, abdomen, ankles and calves, chest, inner knees, chin, cheeks, and neck. Breast reductions, tummy tucks, or face-lifts are frequently performed with lipo as part of a series of cosmetic surgeries.

Techniques have changed and improved over time. In the past, surgeons would remove fat via a device called a cannula. Because this method did not inject fluid into the target area of the body before surgery, it caused a lot of blood loss and significant bruising. This technique is now rarely used, and surgeons instead prioritize a technique that injects tumescent fluid into the targeted area.

Ultrasonic Lipo

Ultrasonic lipo is one of the most modern methods employed in the medical world. A vibrating probe is utilized to implode the fat, leaving the surrounding tissue in place. The probe moves rapidly, removing the fat and leaving the tissue so that the tissue can contribute to the patient’s body contour and skin elasticity. It is important that the tissue remains because it makes up for any irregularities traditional techniques leave visible.

Dr. Egozi’s preferred method is a combination of the tumescent and ultrasonic liposuction technique because it minimizes blood loss and emphasizes patient safety.

The combination of these techniques ensures that patients experience less bruising and swelling while improving the overall shape of their body. Past patients have corroborated that a combination of the two methods achieves the best results.

Before undergoing liposuction, patients must schedule a consultation appointment. It is important that they become educated about the process and understand all options available to them. It is vital that patients understand that this procedure is by no means a substitute for a healthy diet or exercise. It is not intended to treat obesity.

A consultation appointment also provides Dr. Egozi the opportunity to examine all potential candidates, make recommendations, and map out a course of action.
