What are wrinkles?
Wrinkles are an unwanted yet unavoidable sign of aging. The lines, folds, and creases that develop on the skin as we age are completely harmless – and can actually add character to the face – but are certainly an area of concern that most want to keep in check.
Wrinkles can generally be divided into two categories: fine lines and deep wrinkles. Fine lines are a typical result of sun damage, dehydration, and muscle movement, while deep wrinkles come from more excessive collagen break down.
We all remember the unsettling feeling that showers over us when we first notice wrinkles developing on our face. More often than not, wrinkles are first visible around the eyes, mouth, and neck – due to a combination of high sun exposure and years of repeated facial expressions. And as the years go by, the problem inevitably develops into brow lines and drooping jowls before wrinkles are seen on other areas of the body such as the chest and hands.
There is little that can be done to fully prevent wrinkles from forming, but Egozi Plastic Surgery Center offers a range of different cosmetic and surgical treatments that restore your smooth, youthful appearance.
What causes wrinkles?
Wrinkles are entirely unavoidable and are a counterpart of the aging process. Yet, there are things you can do to minimize the effects and slow the process.
The folds and creases that appear on the skin are caused by several factors but, in general, the biggest factor is the decrease of elastin and collagen in our skin. In our youth, skin is able to stretch and retract but as we age, elastin production slows and our skin loses the ‘plump’ appearance.
Decrease of elastin and collagen can be caused by:
- Repetitive or overactive muscle contraction (everything from laughing, frowning and squinting).
- Excessive sun exposure
- Poor diet
Common Treatments for Wrinkles
How to get rid of wrinkles without plastic surgery
For aging faces, there comes a time when moisturizing routines and healthy eating stop giving you the youthful look you’ve been grappling to maintain. Whether it’s laughing lines, eye wrinkles (crow’s feet), or brow lines it’s never been easier for you to turn back the clock and feel more confident in your skin.
Thankfully there are a lot of options for getting rid of wrinkles without plastic surgery at your disposal.
Botox is a short-term injectable treatment that alleviates up to 80% of wrinkles for between three to four months. The straightforward process has little discomfort and takes around 20 minutes per session. For those wanting to ease the appearance of wrinkles that are beginning to appear, Botox is a superb option.
Soft tissue fillers
Worthy alternatives to Botox injectables are soft tissue fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Radiesse. These three injectables are a viable treatment to rectify wrinkles and fine lines, and each come with their own specific benefits. Juvederm, for example, is particularly adept at handling deep wrinkles. Results can last anywhere between 6-24 months but the temporary results can be easily maintained.
Dermabrasion is a non-invasive deep exfoliating facial treatment used to polish the top layers of skin. After a succession of sessions, the treatment softens irregularities such as fine lines, scarring, and hyperpigmentation to give the skin a smoother appearance.
Facelifts, brow lifts
For more severe wrinkling and to restore a more youthful appearance, a face lift procedure can be undertaken. Face lifts provide the most long-lasting results by tightening loose facial skin and supportive muscles to lift deflated skin and smoothen out wrinkles. A brow lift can specifically smoothen forehead wrinkles.
